The ETA 2879 is a reliable automatic mechanical watch movement produced by ETA SA, introduced around 1968 as part of the interchangeable “Gabarit” family alongside FHF calibers. Known for its sturdy construction and low profile of 5.50 mm, it measures 25.60 mm in diameter (11.5 lignes) and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. This movement powered various mid-range watches in the 1970s, featuring day-date complications with bilingual day wheels and instant change mechanisms.

Design and Production
The ETA 2879 integrated its winding gear directly, unlike add-on automatics, creating a robust, low-profile unit ideal for dress watches. Part of the short-lived 1970s ETA 2850 series (time-only: 2851/2850; date: 2853/2852; day-date: 2859/2858/2879/2878), production ended after a few years due to market shifts. Variants like ETA 2878 offered manual winding at the same frequency.
