The ETA 2836-1 is a renowned Swiss automatic watch movement from ETA (now part of Swatch Group), produced mainly from 1979 to 1982, celebrated for its reliability in mid-range timepieces.

Key Specifications

This 25-jewel caliber operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) with a 42-hour power reserve, supporting hours, minutes, sweep seconds, day (at 12 o’clock, multilingual quickset), and date (at 3 o’clock, quickset). It features a hacking seconds hand that stops when setting time via the crown and manual winding capability, requiring about 30-40 crown turns for full wind. Dimensions are 11.5 lignes (25.6mm diameter, 4.7mm thick), making it versatile for dress and dive watches.

Historical Context

Introduced as an evolution of the ETA 2834, the 2836-1 added day-date complications, becoming a workhorse in brands like Tissot, Omega, and Longines during the quartz crisis recovery. Many units earned COSC chronometer certification for superior accuracy (-4/+6 seconds per day). Production ended early 1980s, but spares remain abundant for vintage repairs.

Notable Features

Automatic rotor: Self-winds via wrist motion; bidirectional for efficiency.

Hack mechanism: Precise synchronization.

Robust build: Shock-resistant (Incabloc), anti-magnetic to ISO standards.

Serviceability: Easy disassembly; common in aftermarket upgrades.
