The Wostok 2809 is a manual wind mechanical watch movement that stands out as one of the highest quality wristwatch calibres produced by the Soviet/Russian watch industry. Known also as “Wolna,” this calibre draws significant inspiration from the renowned Swiss Zenith 135 chronometer movement but incorporates distinct features unique to the Russian manufacturing style.

Key features of the Wostok 2809 movement include:

Manual winding mechanism with a yoke winding system.

22 jewels to reduce friction, with important bearings using rubies and some metal bearings in low-stress areas.

Runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour (A/h), which is a slower beat rate compared to many modern movements.

Power reserve of approximately 44 hours.

Large 28.0 mm (12 1/2 ligne) movement diameter and a thickness of about 4.85 mm.

Incorporates a large Glucydur screw balance wheel with 6 screws arranged evenly, apparently more for aesthetics than precise balancing.

Features a Breguet hairspring with a characteristic end curve.

Uses two Russian in-house shock protection systems.

The gear train design is unusual and complex, inspired by the Zenith 135’s architecture, including a mainspring barrel driving the second wheel, a double third wheel, fourth wheel, and escape wheel.

The center seconds hand is driven indirectly via the double third wheel, allowing flutter-free operation without friction springs.

The escapement is a pallet lever type with a special flat escape wheel housed under its own cock with cap jewels for protection and lubrication.

Fine regulation via a cam-adjusted long regulator arm with a curved disc for tuning.

A broad cannon pinion and an hour wheel with an unusually high tooth count distinguish the movement further.

While originally designed for precision with an expected theoretical accuracy deviation of -10 to +5 seconds per day, many specimens tend to run slower and show larger deviations, partly due to aging and the design of balance screws impacting regulation less than expected.

The movement was used mainly in the Vostok Precision line in the late 1950s and early 1960s and is regarded by watch experts as probably the best Russian wristwatch calibre ever made.

Production was limited due to high manufacturing costs and the movement was eventually discontinued, making it a valuable collector’s item today.
