The Zaria 2009B is a notable manual wind watch movement produced by the Russian brand Zaria around 1970. It is a 20mm diameter (8 3/4 lignes) movement with a height of 2.9mm, featuring 21 jewels and running at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (A/h). This caliber is a technically advanced successor to the earlier Zaria 2009 but shares no design similarities with it, representing a significant modernization. One of its unique mechanical traits is the absence of a center minute wheel; instead, a reverser wheel is placed between the mainspring barrel and the second wheel, bearing its own bridge. This design enables the mainspring barrel to rotate in the opposite direction to normal and necessitates an additional reverser wheel in the winding gear train.
The movement uses a yoke winding system and has an 18,000 A/h slow beat, with a three-leg anular Glucydur balance and a Russian-style three-arm shock protection. The gear train includes a double third wheel eliminating play and ensuring smooth center seconds operation, with the center seconds pinion ruby-beared on both movement and dial sides. The movement features a pallet lever escapement and is constructed with solid build quality. Its winding mechanism includes a hands setting wheel that interacts with reverser wheels for precision.
Additional technical features include a hairspring key adjustment mechanism, a setting lever spring assembly with three holes, and on newer versions, preparations for a date indication feature. The power reserve generally runs about 37 hours. Literature references date back to 1983, and the movement is noted for reliability and technical refinement in Russian watchmaking.
Key Highlights:
Manual wind, 20mm diameter, 2.9mm height
21 jewels with special ruby bearings including for the center seconds pinion
Frequency: 18,000 A/h (slow beat)
Unique reverser wheel replacing center minute wheel
Three-leg Glucydur balance with Russian three-arm shock protection
Yoke winding system with intricate gear train design
Solid construction with a pallet lever escapement
Hairspring key adjustment and dated literature references from 1983
Around 37-hour power reserve
Early preparation for calendar function in newer versions
This movement exemplifies Russian innovation in mid-20th-century mechanical watchmaking with an unusual but effective design optimized for reliability and smooth timekeeping.
