The Eterna 1426 calibre stands as a hallmark of mid-20th-century Swiss innovation, captivating vintage watch enthusiasts and hobbyist watchmakers with its pioneering self-winding technology. Introduced in 1953 as part of the Eterna-Matic lineup, this automatic movement exemplifies the golden age of horology, featuring the world’s first ball-bearing rotor system for ultra-smooth winding. Its compact design powered elegant dress watches from the 1950s and 1960s, blending reliability with refined finishing that appeals to restorers today.
Historical Context
Debuted in 1953, the 1426 evolved from Eterna’s Calibre 1411 family, marking a shift to automatic winding amid post-war demand for low-maintenance timepieces.
Variants like 1426U (undated) and 1426UD (with date) appeared in models such as the Eterna-Matic ref. 107 VT, often in 34-35mm stainless steel cases with sunburst dials.
Produced during Eterna’s avant-garde era, it influenced later automatics; Breitling rebranded similar derivatives as Calibre 13 in Navitimers.
